WHAT WE OFFER

INDIVIDUAL PIANO AND VIOLIN LESSONS

The most effective way to learn an instrument is through private lessons. One-on-one instruction allows the teacher to maximize the potential of each student.

Students receive 30, 45 or 60 minute lessons once or twice a week, depending on their age and level. For information on semester calendars and the price of lessons, go to REGISTER.

THEORY & ANALYSIS CLASSES

Theory classes are designed to stimulate your child’s interest in music and to enhance his or her understanding of it. They serve as an ideal supplement for private lessons, allowing students to learn musical concepts in a fun creative atmosphere.

Classes will teach students skills they can apply directly to playing their instrument. Topics include:

  • rhythm & meter
  • scales & chords
  • basic harmony
  • music history
  • music analysis.
  • conducting
  • ear training: where your child will learn to notate music just by hearing it
Class meets once a week for 13 weeks each semester, and each session is 50 minutes long.

Students will be placed in an appropriate class based on their age and theory knowledge. A placement test is required for participation in more advanced classes.

PRIVATE THEORY LESSONS

Students may enroll for private music theory lessons. Topics begin with reading rhythms and notes, and may proceed all the way through college-level theory. These lessons are suggested for students above the age of six and are also available for adults.

COMPOSITION LESSONS

Private composition lessons develop students' creativity and teach them how to write music. Many children start to show interest in composing at a very young age by “making up songs”, changing and rearranging the pieces they play on their instrument, or describing ordinary things through the language of music. Composition lessons encourage their imagination and give them tools in order to achieve more complex levels of expression. Students can learn classical composition, music theater, or jazz composition, as well as arranging, notation, and orchestration. These lessons are suggested for students ages eight and above and are also available for adults.

RECITALS

The International Music Academy holds recitals at the end of each semester. Rice University is currently the site for these performances. In addition, there are several smaller performances opportunities throughout the year.
